I grew up in Noosa on the Sunshine Coast in QLD, Australia before moving closer to Brisbane in my teens. Growing up in Noosa and going to school there was monumental in finding my passion for the ocean. Our school would take us on excursions to study mangroves, life in the rivers, boat trips and even every Friday in the summer we would go to the beach to learn surf life saving. I was so immersed in marine life at such an early age. However, I truly fell in love with it, when my family and I started going up the Great Barrier Reef every year. Sadly every year we went, especially after the devastating cyclone Debbie, there was less and less abundant marine life. I've never felt more inclined to join the fight in protecting our underwater world than when I was snorkelling around what used to be a vast beautiful reef - now destroyed and lacking the sea life I was so fond of as a child.
My life took me in a different direction. I had always believed I wasn't 'logical and mathematical' enough to become a scientist. I ended up becoming a Kindy Teacher and Children's Entertainer in Sydney while attending the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA). I learnt so much about film, video editing and becoming unapologetically myself at NIDA. This was quite an intense time in my life, being out on my own for the first time, in a place I knew no one and studying something that became so emotionally and physically draining for me. Whenever I felt overwhelmed, I always returned to the ocean, I went diving, I went snorkeling - I even became a regular at the SeaLife Aquarium in Sydney. You think I would have made the connection then that Marine life was my passion but that was still yet to come.
I made the decision to leave Sydney behind, but I wanted a nice in-between version of the bustling life in Sydney and the relaxed, slower life of the Sunshine Coast. I ended up in the gorgeous Gold Coast. I took about a year to reset after my time in Sydney and discover what I truly wanted to do. The day I put in my application to study full-time Marine Science, it all just clicked. I felt that feeling of, 'this is what I'm meant to be doing'. Honestly every time I think about that moment, I feel so grateful because since then I have felt so in alignment with myself and I know this is what I am meant to be doing.
